Arop Claims World No. 1 Ranking

STARKVILLE – Former Mississippi State All-American Marco Arop has climbed to the top of the World Athletics event rankings, taking the No. 1 spot in the men’s 800m.

Arop has accumulated 1,401 ranking points, edging out Kenya’s Emmanuel Kipkurui Korir, who won the 2022 World Championship in the event. Arop took home bronze at the World Championships last year, giving Canada its first medal in the men’s 800m since Gary Reed in 2007.

The Edmonton, Alberta, native clocked the second-fastest time in the world this season at the Diamond League Paris meeting when he crossed the line in 1:43.30. That mark was just four-hundredths of a second off of his personal-best, which he ran in Monaco in 2021 to set the Canadian record.

Arop has run in two Diamond League meets this season, and currently ranks fourth with 11 qualification points in the standings. He has met the qualification standard to return to his third World Championships this summer in Budapest, Hungary, beginning on August 19.
