Good Day to Run Fast

200 meters

BOSTON – On a day when Stanford athletes set 10 personal bests, sophomore Juliette Whittaker provided the biggest highlight, breaking the school mile record on Saturday at the John Thomas Terrier Classic.

Whittaker ran 4:30.92 while placing seventh overall and sixth among collegians. All six ran times that placed them among the 30-fastest indoor milers in collegiate history. Whittaker now is No. 30 on the all-time collegiate list on all indoor tracks and No. 27 on regulation 200-meter tracks.

Whittaker actually finished second in Section 2 and was top collegian in that race, and the other top times came from Section 1. Placing fourth in Section 2 was Lucy Jenks, whose 4:36.25 makes her the eighth-fastest miler in Stanford indoor history. In Section 3, Sophia Kennedy ran a personal best 4:43.09 – placing her No. 4 on Stanford’s all-time freshman list.

Whittaker had been Stanford’s fastest on a 200-meter indoor track, running 4:33.89 as a freshman last year, but ranked No. 3 on all indoor tracks. Elise Cranny, a 2020 U.S. Olympian, held the overall school mile mark, running 4:31.29 on University of Washington’s 307-meter Dempsey Indoor track in 2018 to win the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation title.

It was a good day for the Whittakers at the Terrier Classic as sister Isabella of Penn won the 400 in a facility record 51.69.

Stanford concluded two days of competition at both the Terrier Classic at the Boston University Track and Tennis Center and the River Hawk Invitational at the Track at New Balance.

Defending NCAA indoor 800 champion Roisin Willis made her season debut at that distance and finished second at the Terrier Classic and the first collegian. Her time of 2:01.99 is believed to be the second-fastest in NCAA Division I this year and should get her into the NCAA Championships as one of the top 16 times in the nation by season’s end.

A pair of Stanford 200-meter runners excelled Saturday. Cydney Wright won the event at the Terrier Classic in 23.77, which moves her into Stanford’s indoor Top-10 list at No. 7. Freshman Will Floyd took third in the River Hawk in 21.35 and takes the No. 5 spot on the Cardinal men’s indoor list.
