Five Lady Vols Crack Program’s All-Time Top 10 at Raleigh Relays


RALEIGH, N.C. – After four Tennessee men’s distance runner posted all-time top-10 performances in the 5k and 10k Thursday night at the Raleigh Relays, the Lady Vols one-upped the Vols with four women’s distance specialists posting top-10 program mark on Friday at NC State’s Paul Derr Track.
 
Making her outdoor 5k debut, senior Kayla Gholar turned in a mark of 16:05.28 to place sixth in her heat. The Richmond Hill, Georgia, native ranks fifth in school history in the event is the first Lady Vol to crack the program’s outdoor 5k top 10 under distance coach Sean Carlson.
 
The Lady Vols showed out during the women’s 10,000-meter competition in Raleigh, registering five of the program’s top 11 performers in school history in a span of one hour. Graduate student Emily Covert (33:34.94), graduate student Ashley Jones (33:34.96) and junior Rachel Sutliff (33:34.97) ran in a pack throughout the invitational 10k and crossed the finish line simultaneously, grabbing the No. 3, No. 4 and No. 5 spots in program annals, respectively. True freshman Caroline Lyerly ran her first career 10k in the same heat and finished with a time of 34:04.38, sliding up to No. 6 in UT history.
 
Lady Vol senior Msgana Araya contested heat 1 of the open 10,000-meter and finished as the top collegiate athlete in her race with a lifetime-best clocking of 34:49.87. The mark shaved more than 46 seconds off her previous personal best and ranks No. 11 on the Lady Vol all-time charts.
 
DOWN ON THE BAYOU: Tennessee opened up the Battle on the Bayou at LSU on Friday and saw a pair of impressive clockings for top-3 finishes from the 200-meter group. Sophomore T’Mars McCallum dropped a lifetime-best 20.64 to place third for the Vols, while Lady Vol graduate student Dennisha Page equaled her PR of 23.08 to earn a runner-up finish on the women’s side.
 
Freshman javelin thrower Kevin Burr Jr. continued his impressive start with another top-five finish, placing fourth for the Vols with a heave of 67.99 meters (223-0).
 
BIG ORANGE DEBUTS: A pair of Lady Vols made their collegiate track debuts on Friday at the Raleigh Relays, with Jessie Secor (16:37.45) and Jaci Sievers (16:46.78) running the 5k. Additionally, rookies Summer Schuster and Jaylee Wingate saw their first career outdoor action after debuting during the indoor season – running the 5,000- and 1,500-meter, respectively.
