Spartans Finish Outdoor Track & Field Regular Season Strong


PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Michigan State Track and Field wrapped up the outdoor regular season placing among the nation’s best at the historic Penn Relays and claiming victories back home in meets in the mitten state.
 
The MSU throws squad set the tone with several podium finishes at the GVSU Extra Weekend meet Thursday in Allendale, Mich. The Spartans competed in six men’s and women’s distance relays at the highly-touted 128th edition of the Penn Relays on Friday and Saturday. A small group of Spartans successfully concluded the weekend and regular season at the Len Paddock Invitational in Ann Arbor.
 
Weekend Highlights
Penn Relays – Fri. & Sat., April 26-27 | Philadelphia, Pa.

  • In the first DMR since the women won the event at the Big Ten outdoor championships, the relay squad of Harbaugh, Alston, Powers and Ewert place second in the collegiate event Friday in 11:31.67
  • The Spartan men followed with a second place finish of their own as Tim Cherry, Gage Killewald, Patrick Byrnes and Owen Gilbert paced to 7:30.94 in the 4x800m
  • The Michigan State women’s contingent of Lauren Freeland, Sophia Lucki, Olivia Millen and Katie Osika placed fifth in the Championship of America 4×1500 with a time of 17:23.72

 
Len Paddock Invitational – Sat., April 27 | Ann Arbor, Mich.

  • Graduate student Taryn Hankins led the way for the Spartans in Ann Arbor, winning the 100m dash in 11.60 seconds
  • Freshman Melanie Macias raced to second place in the 400m hurdles with a 1:02.88 PR
  • Junior Noah Sage also placed second with a PR, clocking in a 200m dash time of 20.66 seconds

 
GVSU Extra Weekend – Thu., April 25 | Allendale, Mich.

  • Senior Fatima Giron dominated the 10K in Allendale by over a minute, crossing the finish line in 36:08.342
  • In what was a huge day for the throws team to start the week, spearhead by freshman Jessica Stieb who won the shot put at 15.68m, while junior Opal Jackson finished second at 15.52m
  • Jackson also claimed first in the discus with a winning try of 49.68m as the Spartans swept the event with Valadian Pallett and Janan Khalil placing second and third respectively
  • The Spartans completed a sweep of the collegiate hammer throw as well as the junior Pallet won with a 56.75m PR, Elle Adrian finished second and Eriana Hubbard behind her in third
