ACC Announces Week Six Outdoor Track and Field Performers of the Week


CHARLOTTE, N.C. (theACC.com) – Virginia Tech freshman Chidozie Kalu highlighted the Atlantic Coast Conference’s Outdoor Track and Field Performers of the Week for the sixth week of the season. Kalu was named both the ACC Men’s Outdoor Field Athlete of the Week and the ACC Men’s Outdoor Freshman of the Week. Virginia’s Nate Mountain earned ACC Men’s Outdoor Track Athlete of the Week to round out the trio of selections.
 
On the women’s side, Lindsey Butler of Virginia Tech and Makayla Paige of North Carolina were named ACC Women’s Outdoor Co-Track Athletes of the Week. Notre Dame’s Jadin O’Brien earned the ACC Outdoor Women’s Field Athlete of the Week honor, while Pitt’s Somiyah Braggs was named the ACC Outdoor Women’s Freshman of the Week.

ACC Men’s Outdoor Track Athlete of the Week

Nate Mountain, Jr., Virginia, Cincinnati, Ohio

Mountain ran a blistering 8:20.68 to finish second and break both the ACC and Virginia records at the Virginia Challenge. His time ranks first in the ACC by 13 seconds and is the fastest time in the NCAA by five seconds. Mountain, a native of Cincinnati, Ohio, achieved the Olympic Trials Standard in the event and ranks 13th in collegiate history.

 

ACC Women’s Outdoor Co-Track Athletes of the Week

Lindsey Butler, Sr., Virginia Tech, Corning, N.Y.

Butler set her fifth Virginia Tech program record on Friday in the 1,500-meter run at the Wake Forest Invitational. The senior crossed the line in a personal-best time of 4:07.96, taking third among collegiate athletes. Her record-breaking time is currently tied for third in the country and leads the ACC. Additionally, Butler holds the Hokies’ indoor records in the 800-meter, 1000-meter, mile and distance medley relay.

 

Makayla Paige, Jr., North Carolina, Tewksbury, Mass.

Paige broke a 21-year-old Tar Heels’ program record in the 800-meter over the weekend at the Wake Forest Invitational. Her time of 2:00.97 ranks as the second-fastest in the ACC this season and fifth among all collegiate runners this year.
