STANFORD, Calif. – Stanford sophomore Roisin Willis won her season outdoor debut in her specialty, the 800 meters, at the Payton Jordan Invitational track and field meet on Friday night at Cobb Track and Angell Field.

Willis, the 2023 NCAA indoor 800 champion, ran 2:02.36 as she led from start to finish. The time is the 14th fastest in NCAA Division I this season.

After opening with a 58.85 first lap, Willis found her lead cut on the backstretch by pro Kate Mitchell, who closed within a stride or two. But Willis found an extra gear on the homestretch to hold Mitchell off by nearly a second.

Long-distance specialist Ky Robinson ran the men’s 1,500 and set a personal record of 3:41.56 while finishing sixth.

Stanford freshman Amy Bunnage, the 2023 Pac-12 cross country champion, made her collegiate outdoor debut. In the 5,000, Bunnage led until the final four laps and eventually placed eighth in 15:38.75. Stanford alumna Vanessa Fraser was fourth in the race in 15:33.37.

Though the meet is known for its long-distance races, Stanford athletes excelled in other events. In particular, the team of Tess Stapleton, Cydney Wright, Teagan Zwaanstra, and Alyssa Jones won the 4×100 in 44.01 – the third-fastest women’s time in school history.

In the women’s pole vault, Sky Schuller cleared 13-3 ¾ (4.06m) to win. That mark strengthened her hold at No. 7 at Stanford all-time outdoors and No. 4 indoors or outdoors in Stanford freshmen history.

In the men’s shot put, Sam Liokumovich won with a distance of 59-4 ¼ (18.09m), and holds the No. 7 spot on Stanford’s all-time outdoor list.

Stanford resumes action on Tuesday when it closes out its home season with the 129th Big Meet dual against Cal, at Cobb Track and Angell Field.
