Coach Bernard Lagat to Join New York City Marathon Broadcast

TUCSON, Ariz. – Arizona cross country head coach and five-time Olympian Bernard Lagat will be joining the broadcast team for the 50th annual New York City Marathon this Sunday, Nov. 7.

The race will begin at 6:30 a.m. MST and will air on ESPN2 nationally as well as ABC7/WABC-TV in the local area. It will also stream live on the ESPN App from 5:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. MST. Additionally, pre-race coverage can be streamed on ESPN3 from 4:00 a.m. to 5:30 a.m.

Coach Lagat will be working alongside Olympic medalist and American record holder Deena Kastor and Olympian Carrie Tollefson. They will be joining a team of 15 commentators including ESPN’s John Anderson.

“In 2008, I got to watch the TCS New York City Marathon from a lead vehicle, and in 2018 I ran New York for my debut marathon,” said coach Lagat. “I’m excited that in 2021, I get to see the race unfold from yet another angle – in the broadcast booth. I hope my experiences as an athlete can add a different perspective to the race for those watching throughout New York City and across the country.”

As Coach Lagat makes his broadcast debut, his sister, Viola Cheptoo, will be competing in her first professional marathon.
