No. 9 Wake Forest Finishes Sixth in Stacked Field at Cowboy Jamboree

STILLWATER, Okla. – In a field that featured eight of the top-10 teams nationally, the ninth-ranked Wake Forest men’s cross country team finished sixth in the collegiate men’s 8k at the Cowboy Jamboree Saturday.

The Demon Deacons were paced by last year’s regional runner-up, Aaron Las Heras, who ran a personal best time of 23:42.2 to finish 14th. Thomas Vannoppen (23:48.4) and Joaquin Martinez De Pinillos (23:54.4) also ran personal bests, as they finished 23rd and 29th, respectively.

Two-time All-American Zach Facioni had a solid performance as he placed 44th, running 24:07.4, while Luke Tewalt (24:17.5) and Ben Mitchell (24:18.7) finished 68th and 71st, respectively.

As a team, Wake Forest joined BYU and Colorado as the only programs to have six or more runners finish in the top-71.

Saturday’s meet was the first race of the season for each of Wake Forest’s seven runners.

Quotables

“Today was a good opener for us. The men are just handling the process exactly how good teams should. We are going to have to improve in order to have a shot to win the ACC and place well at the NCAA Championships, but I am confident in these young men. They work hard on a daily basis. In eight weeks, we hope to be back here ready to take care of business.” – Director of track & field and cross country John Hayes
