RALEIGH, N.C. – The Virginia men’s and women’s track and field programs made a statement on the first day of competition at the 2024 Raleigh Relays where Will Anthony (10,000m) and Gary Martin (5000m) set school records at the Paul Derr Track & Field Facility.
Will Anthony Sets School Record in 10,000m
- Will Anthony made a statement winning the men’s 10,000m run under the lights. Anthony crossed the line in 28:21.93 to out step the Butler athlete’s 28:25.89.
- Anthony crushed the previous program record of 28:44.22 held by Zach Herriot from 2017 by nearly 20 seconds.
- The victory marks Anthony’s first collegiate win.
- The Whitby, Poriua, New Zealand native also took down the freshman record. The previous record was held by Adam Visokay at 29:14.50 from 2014.

Gary Martin Sets School Record in 5000m
- Gary Martin executed his race from the front pack in the final heat of the men’s 5000m. Martin shattered the school record kicking in the final 100 meters to cross the line in 13:31.51 for second place.
- Not far behind Martin was teammate Nate Mountain in third place. Mountain also ran under the previous school record clocking a new personal-best time of 13:32.65.
- In his first 5000m race this season, sophomore Andrew Jones also recorded a personal-best. Jones crossed the line in 13:56.08 to finish fourth in the sixth heat.

Setting the Tone in the Men’s 1500m
- James Donahue led the charge for the Cavaliers in a competitive field. Donahue crossed the line in 3:40.27 to become the eighth fastest Cavalier in program history. His time also ranks as the second fastest freshman in Virginia history, second to his teammate Gary Martin’s 3:39.53 from 2023.
- Running from the front of the pack, Conor Murphy ran a strong race crossing the line in 3:40.88 to finish nineth in the field. Murphy was not far off his personal-best of 3:39.75 from…
