Altieri Selected As Big Ten Runner To Watch

COLLEGE PARK, MD – Heading into the start of the 2024 cross country season, the Big Ten announced today it’s Runners To Watch for the year with senior Katie Altieri chosen as one of the top performers in the league.

Altieri has been one of the top distance runners for the Terps throughout her career. Last year during the cross country campaign, she had a pair of top-five finishes with four-place showings at the Baltimore Metro Meet and the Navy Cross Country Invitational.

At the Big Ten Championships and the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional meets, she placed 36th and 37th overall, respectively, and was the top performer for the Terps.

The Big Ten All-Academic honoree has also excelled on the track where she holds the fourth-fastest mark in the 5,000 meters (16:38.24) and the fifth-fastest time in the indoor 3,000 meters (9:38.42).

Maryland will open the 2024 cross country schedule on August 31 when the Terps head to the Salisbury Invite. Overall, the squad will take part in four regular season races before heading to the Big Ten Championships (Nov. 1) and then NCAA events.

Last season, the Terps finished 10th at the Big Ten Championship to equal its best mark in the event originally set in 2017. That set-up an eighth-place finish at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional meet which was the best finish for the harriers since 2003.

Maryland will be headlined this season by the veteran trio of AltieriRose Coats, and Katie Turk. The Terps return 12 members from last season’s squad while adding six newcomers.
