Five events to watch: Badgers compete at Stanford Invitational


MADISON, Wis. – The Wisconsin men’s track and field team is traveling to Stanford, California, to compete at the Stanford Invitational meet. Events begin on Friday at 11 a.m. CT and on Saturday at 11 a.m. CT. All events will be streamed live on FloTrack ($). Follow along for live results on Twitter and Instagram @BadgerTrackXC.

Here are the five events to watch:

1. HEFTY THROWS: Jason Swarens threw a personal best of 171 feet, 9 inches in the discus at the USF Bulls Invitational two weeks ago and is set to compete in the throws this weekend. He will be joined by teammates Jake Schaefer and Andrew Stone in the discus while Stone, who is the outdoor school record holder in the shot put, will also be competing in that event. A quartet of throwers are entered in hammer throw led by Big Ten Indoor hammer champion Sam Coil. He will be joined by Badgers Swarens, Cole Hooper and Nick Tomasovic.

2. DECATHLON TRAINING: Decathletes Cade Amborn and Quinn Lansill have a busy weekend ahead with both scheduled to compete in multiple events. Both are entered in the 110-meter high hurdles and javelin while Amborn is also entered in the long jump. Amborn is coming off his first All-America honor, finishing 11th in the NCAA indoor heptathlon. 

3. UP IN THE AIR: Senior Justin Kiefel is entered in both the long jump and triple jump this weekend. The transfer set a personal record in the long jump during the indoor season at Big Ten Championships with a leap of 23-0 ¾.

4. DISTANCE DANGER: Badgers Rowen Ellenberg, Bob Liking, Jack Meijer, and Jackson Sharp are set to compete in this weekend’s distance events. Meijer took the win in the 5K event at the USF Bulls Invitational two weeks ago with Ellenberg finishing second and Liking in third. Sharp will make his outdoor debut this weekend after finishing third in the NCAA Indoor 3,000 meters. Liking and freshman Micah Wilson are scheduled to run the 10,000 meters this weekend, Freshman Benjamin Nibbelink is also set to make his debut in the 3000-meter steeplechase.

5. MIDDLE DISTANCE STARS: Middle distance starts Abdullahi Hassan and Adam Spencer set to make their outdoor debuts this weekend. Hassan is entered in the 400 meters and 800 meters while Spencer is scheduled to compete in the 800 meters and 1500 meters. Rowen Ellenberg is also entered in the 1500 meters.
